Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health crisis that has affected more than 12 million people worldwide, including more than half of those in developing countries. AMR is associated with a significant number of deaths, including heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and infectious complications including cancer. This study investigated the efficacy and mechanisms of tetracycline in the induction of AMR in a murine model of COPD. To test the efficacy of tetracycline in the induction of AMR, mice were treated with oral tetracycline at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg daily for 3 days. Lung biopsy samples were collected at different times of the experimental period. The results showed that there was an increase in the number of lung biopsies in rats treated with tetracycline, as well as a reduction in lung histological score, and in lung inflammation in the rats treated with tetracycline for 3 days. In a further study, mice treated with tetracycline were also evaluated for their ability to develop lung fibrosis and inflammation. Tetracycline treatment reduced the number of lung biopsies by 50% in rats treated with the high-dose group. The decrease in lung histological score was observed in all the groups, with lung fibrosis in the high-dose group, and inflammation in the high-dose group. In addition, the number of lung biopsies in rats treated with the high-dose group was reduced by 50%. Tetracycline was effective in the induction of AMR in mice.

Respiratory problems and acute lung injury are the global public health crisis.
